Plant Health Scientist 

 

POSITION PURPOSE:

  • Deliver high-quality, scalable plant health data across Asia breeding pipelines (corn and regional crops).
  • Co-ordinate across region to establish innovation in phenomics, driving adoption of advanced technologies (UAVs, satellite imaging, AI-based image analysis).
  • Design, validate and deploy high-throughput field and controlled environment (CE) phenotyping protocols.
  • Transform complex phenotypic and imaging data into actionable insights to enable breeding decisions.
  • Build regional capabilities by coaching teams and strengthening expertise in digital phenotyping and data collection systems.

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Field & Phenomics Delivery

  • Plan and execute field data collection campaigns, including trial design, disease screening, and phenotyping activities.
  • Lead disease scoring and phenotypic assessments, ensuring quality, consistency, and timeliness.
  • Oversee plant health assays and pathogen culture management to ensure reliable, high-quality data generation and effective integration with field insights.

 

Innovation & Digital Phenotyping

  • Drive deployment and validation of new phenomics technologies, including:
    • UAV-based imaging (multispectral, RGB, thermal)
    • Satellite-based phenotyping solutions
    • Ground sensors and proximal sensing tools
  • Develop and refine image analysis pipelines (AI/ML-based where applicable) for disease detection and quantification.
  • Pilot and scale automated phenotyping workflows across Asia.

 

Data Quality & Integration

  • Ensure high-quality, reproducible datasets, including QA/QC processes.
  • Integrate field and imaging data into breeding data systems and analytics platforms.
  • Contribute to development of data pipelines, dashboards, and visualization tools.

Protocol Development & Validation

  • Design and standardize high-throughput phenotyping protocols adaptable to diverse Asian environments.
  • Validate new tools and methods against conventional assessments.
  • Establish KPIs and benchmarking metrics for phenotyping efficiency and accuracy.

 

Operational Planning

  • Develop annual plans for field trials, phenotyping capacity, and resource allocation.
  • Coordinate with field operations for trial execution and logistics.
  • Manage partnerships with external vendors (e.g., UAV providers, imaging platforms).
  • Collaborate with commercial teams to enable the successful launch of new products through timely plant health and phenotyping insights.
  • Train regional teams on phenomics tools, imaging technologies and protocols.
  • Act as a technical reference for digital phenotyping in Asia.
  • Contribute to global knowledge sharing within the Plant Health network.

 

Key Working Relations

  • Close collaboration with regional breeding teams across Asia crops.
  • Partnership with DSE and ARI to scale digital solutions.
  • Active participation in the Plant Health Capability Center.
  • Engagement with external technology providers and research partners.
  • Partner closely with commercial teams to support product advancement and launch readiness across target markets.

WHO YOU ARE:

Education & Experience

  • PhD or MSc (with 3+years of experience) in Plant Pathology.
  • Preferred with experience in field and Digital phenotyping.

 

Technical Expertise

  • Strong background in:
    • Plant disease epidemiology and phenotyping
    • Field trial design and execution
    • Plant pathogen isolation and culture management to support consistent assay delivery, data integrity, and informed decision-making.
    • Knowledge of molecular diagnostics to support accurate disease identification, assay development, and data-driven plant health decisions.
  • Hands-on experience with:
    • UAV/drone operations and image acquisition
    • Satellite data applications in agriculture
    • Image analysis / computer vision for plant traits
  • Experience with data processing and coding (Python, R, or similar).

Digital & Innovation Mindset

  • Proven ability to evaluate and deploy new technologies.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML applications in agriculture is a strong plus.

 

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Ability to work in cross-functional and multicultural environments.
  • Ability to influence without authority and drive adoption of new tools.
  • Experience in training and capability development.
  • Strong Communication skill
  • Ability to synthesize complex data into clear, decision-oriented insights.
