Senior Manager- Tax Operations 

 

Position Purpose –

Responsible for providing comprehensive strategic and operational leadership for tax compliance, tax reporting, tax accounting, and other tax-related matters. This role will not only oversee day-to-day tax activities but also drive strategic initiatives to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of tax operations across the region.

 

Key Tasks-

Home Lead:

- Provide visionary leadership for the Tax Capability Community, overseeing and mentoring a high-performing team of up to 20 tax professionals. Foster a culture of excellence, collaboration, and accountability while serving as a VACC leader with a strong emphasis on tax compliance, reporting, and advisory processes.

- Oversee the entire employee lifecycle, encompassing hiring, onboarding, professional development, succession planning, and retirement, to ensure a resilient workforce and business continuity for Work Teams.

- Strategically manage resources and talent through comprehensive workforce forecasting and targeted recruitment efforts, ensuring optimal headcount allocation to meet functional objectives and strategic goals.

- Supervise HR administration and system-related activities (e.g., access rights, permits) to support the operational efficiency of the tax team.

- Aggregate and act on peer feedback, facilitating development discussions and implementing follow-up actions to enhance career progression and professional growth.

- Cultivate collaboration and harmonization across various capability communities, Communities of Practice, and Work Squads, acting as a pivotal link between Global Process Owners (GPOs), Expert Hubs, and Squads in tax processes.

- Champion the standardization of tax processes and tools on a global scale, while fostering innovation, automation, and increased digitization within tax operations.

- Build and leverage strategic relationships with senior leaders across Finance, Operations, and other functions to ensure tax solutions are tailored to meet the evolving needs of business stakeholders.

- Identify and nurture high-potential tax talent, positioning the team as a key pipeline for future senior leadership roles.

- Inspire and lead all department members by fostering an environment of constant and personalized development, enhancing engagement, trust, and overall team morale.

- Continuously identify and develop talent within the organization, actively seeking and providing growth opportunities to enhance team capabilities and career progression.

Work Lead:

- Oversee all tax compliance, reporting, and advisory activities for assigned country groups/clusters, ensuring adherence to Bayer Group policies and local tax regulations. This includes execution of tax activities such as VAT, withholding tax, local tax returns, business tax compliance activities, and quarterly tax reporting.

- Assume full accountability for the end-to-end tax process across assigned countries, ensuring accurate and timely reporting to internal and external stakeholders, including tax authorities, while maintaining standardization, governance, and compliance with global policies and local laws.

- Ensure the timely and accurate submission of tax returns, VAT filings, withholding tax declarations, and other statutory reports, coordinating effectively with Bayer’s GBS network, outsourcing partners, and external advisors.

- Maintain comprehensive oversight of the internal control system for all tax-relevant processes, ensuring they are safeguarded against material misstatements due to error or fraud.

- Serve as the primary representative for Tax to Bayer’s senior country management, external auditors, tax authorities, and other regulatory stakeholders.

- Collaborate and provide guidance on complex, recurring, and exceptional tax matters, including restructuring projects, M&A, cross-border transactions, employee benefit taxation, and financial instruments, ensuring compliance with IFRS and local GAAP.

- Spearhead the transformation of the tax organization within the Regional Finance Hub in Gdansk, including the seamless integration of Affiliates’ tax functions into the GBS Tax teams, ensuring alignment with global standards and practices.

- Ensure the effective implementation of country and group tax policies, controls, best practices, and cross-country tax models, particularly for initiatives driven by business divisions or corporate functions.

- Facilitate seamless connectivity between divisions, functions, GBS, Group Tax HQ, and external service providers through proactive involvement in country-level initiatives.

Identify and implement improvement opportunities through digital transformation, process optimization, and enhancements in data quality for tax reporting and compliance.

- Guide the Work Team in defining outcomes, steering delivery during 90-day cycles, and ensuring high-quality, timely results. Support the team in operating within these cycles, guiding them to identify and eliminate non-value-added activities to optimize performance and drive results.

- Proactively remove obstacles to accelerate value delivery, optimize performance, and foster a diverse, inclusive, and high-trust work environment.

 

Qualification-

- Educational Background: Chartered Accountant, expertise in Taxation, knowledgable in Finance, Accounting, Law, Business, complemented by 15+ years of extensive experience in taxation.

- 8+ years of proven experience in leading mid-sized teams.

- Professional Experience: Demonstrated expertise in a professional tax practice within multinational companies, with preferred experience in international tax firms. Experience in Global Business Services (GBS) centers is a significant advantage.

- Tax Operations Expertise: Solid experience across Tax Operations, Tax Accounting/Reporting, Corporate Income Tax, Indirect Taxes, and International Tax, with a comprehensive understanding of the complexities involved.

- Strong Tax Judgement: Proven ability to apply sound tax judgement and business acumen, with a capacity for rapid learning and adaptation to new tax regulations and environments.

- Technical Proficiency: Proficient in SAP and knowledgeable about relevant Accounting, Tax, and Finance processes at both the legal entity and group levels within multinational corporations.

- Process Visualization: Ability to visualize and understand processes from end to end, identifying areas for improvement and efficiency.

- Familiarity with Bayer Tools: Comprehensive knowledge of Bayer tools (e.g., SAP, SSF, SharePoint, etc.) to enhance operational effectiveness.

- Leadership and Development Skills: Strong leadership capabilities to motivate, coach, and develop diverse teams, fostering a culture of growth and collaboration.

- Analytical and Proactive Mindset: Excellent analytical skills combined with a proactive attitude to drive process improvements and implement effective solutions.

- Customer-Oriented Approach: Exceptional customer-oriented mindset, change management skills, and ability to work effectively as a team player.

- Complex Problem-Solving: Competence to grasp and synthesize complex subjects, translating them into actionable operational activities.

- Language Proficiency: High proficiency in English, both written and spoken, is essential to effectively engage with global teams and stakeholders.
