Translation Digital Pathology Lead (e/v/e/r/y/o/n/e) 

 

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The Digital Pathology Lead strategically influences development of the oncology portfolio by implementing strategies leveraging AI-powered pathology. This individual will be responsible for driving a strong network of relationships and collaborations internally and externally, for the purposes of developing digital pathology algorithms as tools for effective delivery of precision medicine. In this role, you will enable clinical teams by scouting and incorporating state-of-the-art imaging strategies and suggesting (emerging) digital pathology approaches and techniques that will aid the development of new drugs. The Digital Pathology Lead will work closely with Computer Scientists, Clinical Development, Regulatory and commercial/marketing functions to help define the development strategy and plan for registration with companion diagnostics as appropriate. The position will also work closely with partner biomarker companies.

 

Major tasks:

  • Responsible for directing the global oncology Digital Pathology (DP) strategy across portfolio by providing expertise and leadership to the group of Translational Scientists.
  • Ensure that all global precision medicine strategies investigating use of DP are meeting various HA requirements, taking in account local requirements.
  • Maintain a deep awareness and understanding of clinical biomarker and translational medicine and development programs across oncology portfolio and provide critical input in developing translational strategies to bring new agents to the clinic.
  • Takes end-to-end ownership of all aspects of pathology delivery in synchronization with the drug R&D process, informed by deep understanding of clinical development in Oncology and state-of-the-art digital pathology strategies including the use of biomarkers.
  • Owns, sources and develops digital pathology knowledge to support Bayer differentiation and registration strategy, when necessary.
  • Works closely with Product Team Leads and Clinical Development colleagues and the data sciences team to ensure digital pathology strategy has maximum success rate.
  • Provides the development of imaging tools to measure response/effectiveness of drug being developed via internal and external collaborations.
  • Ensures regulatory compliance of pathology activities and drives qualification processes with partners.
  • Provides expertise for pathology review, digital pathology workflow and image analysis using software platforms both internally and with external stake holders.
  • In alignment with the overall oncology and Translational Sciences strategy, independently identifies new opportunities for collaboration and manages excellent relationships with new and existing partners, both within as well as outside of Bayer, to drive Imaging excellence.
  • Independently leads and drives Translation Science Oncology (TSO)-initiated (cross-) functional strategic initiatives in support of the overall Research and Early Development Oncology, Oncology and/or Bayer strategy; can act as a representative of TSO in other cross-functional activities and workstreams where required and takes accountability for the respective team outcomes.
  • Independently leads motivated and engaged teams while role modelling and fostering effective team behavior to achieve development program goals.
  • Takes accountability to further develop the TSO organization beyond assigned programs to strengthen team setup and resilience.

 

WHO YOU ARE

 

  • Medical doctor (MD or MD/PhD) or scientist (PhD) trained in clinical pathology/pathophysiology including 7 years of industry experience, OR a Masters’ degree trained in clinical pathology/pathophysiology including at least 9 years of industry experience.
  • Proven track record of clinical development (including strong experiences in oncology applications with emphasis on digital pathology and biomarker use) Understanding of scientific, commercial, regulatory, ethical and legal aspects in the field.
  • In-depth understanding of clinical pathology and clinical development in oncology; including detailed experience with regulatory framework for biomarkers, and use of pathology and digital tools for registration of Oncology products. Experience interacting with CROs.
  • Outstanding scientific reputation as evidenced by multiple publications in peer-reviewed journals and as speaker of conferences and strong network in the academic and clinical community of Oncology and Pathology (mandatory) and of Oncology (preferred).
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Able to set and communicate a strategic vision.
