Principal Data Scientist 


Biomedical Data Science is a Computational Biology team within Oncology Research and Early Development at Bayer. We are expanding our research team in Boston, with a focus on developing precision molecular oncology therapies that exploit tumor. Our objective is to deliver novel insights on therapeutic mechanisms and patient populations through analysis of large, complex datasets, in collaboration with internal and external partners, including renowned institutions such as the Broad Institute.




The primary responsibilities of this role, Principal Data Scientist, are to:


  • Design and conduct complex analyses in order to identify novel targets, biomarkers and other insights relevant for the translation of research projects into clinical development stages;
  • Lead analyses of omics datasets, including cancer genomics, transcriptomics, functional genomics, proteomics and screening data;
  • Collaborate with researchers from various backgrounds (biology, pharmacology, chemistry, translational sciences) in order to identify critical points in drug discovery projects, and provide appropriate solutions for such critical points through analyses of available complex datasets;
  • Contribute to the development of code, bioinformatics analyses pipelines, computational tools and databases for mining and visualizing genomic data sets;
  • Lead computational biology initiatives within the broader Data Science community;
  • Represent computational biology in key collaborations with academic or commercial partners.

Required qualifications:


  • PhD with five years of experience or Masters degree with 12 years of experience in life sciences (bioinformatics, chemistry, biology, medicine, physics, informatics, or related subject) with efficient statistical or computational focus;
  • Maintain experience with project prioritization and interdisciplinary collaborations in a matrix organization for three years;
  • Sustain strong analytical thinking, coupled with striving for scientific excellence and life long learning;
  • Uphold persuasive communication skills to present complex issues clearly and convincingly to project teams, decision bodies and senior stakeholders;
  • Continue expert level of proficiency in programming and analysis in R or Python, including a deep understanding of advanced analytic techniques and emerging forms of analytics;
  • Demonstrate advanced business acumen, people and project leadership competencies and technical expertise;
  • Fluent in English.
