There are so many reasons to join us. If you’re hungry to build a varied and meaningful career in a community of brilliant and diverse minds to make a real difference, there’s only one choice.

Scientist I - Precision Cardiology

Bayer has an opening for a Scientist to join the Precision Cardiology Team in Cambridge, MA. This is a unique collaboration where scientists from academia and industry work together in interdisciplinary teams to identify and validate molecular targets for cardiovascular diseases, with the goal of advancing novel therapeutics to the clinic to benefit patients.

We are looking for a researcher with experience using hiPS cell technologies and/or primary cell cultures to join our In Vitro Cluster and take initiative in the design and execution of functional disease-modeling cellular assays. Specifically, the candidate will design and conduct experimental research studies at the bench and contribute to target identification and validation efforts.

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The primary responsibilities of this Scientist I role are to:

  • Lead novel target proposals and experimental validation to support growth of our early cardiovascular portfolio and bring an understanding of the role of the immune system in cardiac homeostasis and disease;
  • Design and execute on functional cellular assays using human iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes and/or relevant primary or engineered cell lines;
  • Develop research plans for executing strategy, operate and maintain equipment, and perform laboratory work, with complete independence;
  • Contribute to maintenance of human induced pluripotent stem cell cultures (hiPSC) and differentiation of cells towards cardiomyocytes;
  • Engage in close collaboration with scientists and technical staff of the In Vitro Cluster based at the German sites to share knowledge, drive progress and stimulate innovation;
  • Prepare and update experimental protocols;
  • Independently perform data analysis and effectively interpret results;
  • Lead publication of results, prepare reports and presentations at both internal and external forums;
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues and interdisciplinary teams both within Bayer and with external collaborators;
  • Assess external targets and programs to understand the competitive landscape and identify potential opportunities for collaboration.

WHO YOU ARE

Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Biology (Cellular, Molecular or Developmental Biology), Biochemistry, or related life scientific field;
  • Background in cardiorenal disease biology;
  • Experience in cellular assay development and proficiency with standard assay formats in primary and cultured cells (e.g. flow cytometry, imaging, luminescence-/fluorescence-based cellular readouts, immunohistochemistry);
  • Hands-on experience ES/iPS cells and cardiomyocyte differentiation protocols;
  • Experience with primary cell culture of cardiac, vascular or immune origin;
  • Experience in conducting functional assays using cardiomyocytes (with contractility, metabolic or electrophysiology readouts);
  • Track record of working on complex problems, and ability to integrate data from multiple disciplines;
  • Strong interpersonal, influencing, and collaboration skills to work in a team-oriented, matrix environment, and the ability to work through conflicts;
  • Demonstrate outstanding personal initiative, communication skills, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team;
  • Ability to adapt to and effectively manage changes in a fast paced and dynamic environment;
  • A passion for science and sense of urgency to find new therapies for patients.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 0-2 years of research Post-Doc experience (in industry or academia)
