Fermentation Scientist 

 

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Design and optimize fermentations for protein production, media optimization, strain screening and support for biologics manufacturing sites.

 

The primary responsibilities of this role, Fermentation Scientist, are to: 

 

  • Design and optimize fermentation processes for protein production, focusing on yield, productivity, and product quality;
  • Develop and implement strategies for media optimization, ensuring optimal growth and productivity of microbial strains in fermentation;
  • Conduct strain screening and evaluation to identify and select high-performing strains for protein/biomolecule expression;
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Process Development, Analytical Sciences, and Manufacturing, to support biologics manufacturing activities;
  • Provide technical expertise and troubleshooting support to biologics manufacturing sites, including addressing fermentation-related issues and process deviations;
  • Optimize and scale-up fermentation processes from laboratory to pilot scales, ensuring process robustness and reproducibility;
  • Design and execute experiments, analyze data, and interpret results to drive process improvements and optimize performance;
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in fermentation technologies, media formulations, and process optimization strategies;
  • Maintain accurate and detailed documentation of experiments, data, and procedures in compliance with regulatory guidelines and company standards.

 

WHO YOU ARE

 

Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:

 

 Required Qualifications:

 

  • Master's degree in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., Microbiology, Biotechnology, Biochemical Engineering) with a strong focus on fermentation and protein production;
  • Extensive hands-on experience in designing and optimizing fermentation processes for protein expression, including media optimization, strain screening, and scale-up optimization and data analysis;
  • In-depth knowledge microbiology, fermentation, and bioreactor operation;
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot and resolve fermentation-related issues;
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams;
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and prioritize work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Ph.D. degree in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., Microbiology, Biotechnology, Biochemical Engineering) with a strong focus on fermentation and protein production;
  • Familiarity with upstream bioprocessing techniques, including fermentation and purification, is desirable.
