At Bayer we’re visionaries, driven to solve the world’s toughest challenges and striving for a world where 'Health for all Hunger for none’ is no longer a dream, but a real possibility. We’re doing it with energy, curiosity and sheer dedication, always learning from unique perspectives of those around us, expanding our thinking, growing our capabilities and redefining ‘impossible’. There are so many reasons to join us. If you’re hungry to build a varied and meaningful career in a community of brilliant and diverse minds to make a real difference, there’s only one choice.
Genome Editing Scientist Delivery
You will focus on advancing cutting-edge genome editing and delivery technologies, with a particular focus on alternative in-planta delivery approaches that expand germplasm-independent (genotype-agnostic) access and reduce reliance on conventional tissue culture and stable transformation; Working within the innovative Crop Genome Editing team, you will help create next-generation editing capabilities that drive our mission of developing resilient and sustainable agricultural solutions, and advance our mission of “Health for All and Hunger for None” through transformative genome editing capabilities.
YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The primary responsibilities of this role are to:
- Lead, design, and execute research projects to develop and optimize alternative in-planta delivery methods for genome editing cargo in crop plants;
- Design and execute experiments to evaluate DNA-free and/or tissue culture–independent approaches for introducing molecular cargo into plant cells and reproductive tissues;
- Develop, document, and transfer fit-for-purpose protocols that enable robust, germplasm-independent performance across diverse genetic backgrounds and experimental conditions;
- Evaluate and optimize methods intended to bypass common limitations in traditional transformation and regeneration systems (e.g., genotype dependence, lengthy timelines);
- Benchmark emerging and alternative delivery concepts against internal standards, defining success criteria, key metrics, and decision points;
- Apply knowledge of plant development and reproductive biology to identify optimal intervention points and target tissues for delivery and editing;
- Collaborate across diverse teams (molecular tools, breeding, product design, regulatory science, and pipeline partners) to develop and implement outcome-driven research proposals;
- Analyze experimental data to guide iterative improvement and communicate findings clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders;
- Stay current with scientific literature and external innovation to incorporate relevant emerging technologies;
- Present findings to internal stakeholders and, as appropriate, at scientific conferences.
WHO YOU ARE
Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:
- PhD in plant biology, developmental biology, plant physiology, bioengineering, or a related field with 5+ years of relevant experience; or MS with 10+ years of demonstrated track record in scientific research;
- Strong knowledge of plant development, reproductive biology, and tissue differentiation;
- Hands-on experience with plant modification and delivery methods and molecular biology techniques, including DNA, RNA, and/or protein handling;
- Proven ability to design, execute, and interpret complex experiments, using data to drive decision-making and iterative optimization;
- Strong collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams and communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders;
- Demonstrated ability to stay current with scientific literature and translate emerging technologies into practical, fit-for-purpose solutions.
Employees can expect to be paid a salary between $111,520.00 - $167,280.00 Additional compensation may include a bonus or incentive compensation (if relevant). Additional benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, PTO, sick leave, etc.. This salary range is merely an estimate and may vary based on an applicant’s location, market data/ranges, an applicant’s skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other relevant factors.
