YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This role works closely with the Genomics & Sequencing team to deliver daily and weekly sequencing targets under defined timelines. The position is responsible for generating high‑quality sequencing data for biotech workflows, managing sample organization and tracking, and operating automation to support routine sequencing runs. The role also involves performing experiments, applying specialized scientific techniques, identifying opportunities for process improvement, and staying current with advances in the field.
The primary responsibilities of this role, R&D Specialist III, are to:
- Operate Illumina and other NGS instruments with high technical accuracy, ensuring reliable, high‑throughput sequencing supported by proper sample organization and LIMS tracking;
- Execute automated and manual sequencing workflows, troubleshoot instrument and process issues, and apply strong laboratory and sequencing expertise to maintain consistent, high‑quality results;
- Work primarily in the laboratory (≈80%) and participate in weekend sequencing run coverage (typically one weekend per month);
- Follow all SOPs, quality standards, safety requirements, and documentation practices while contributing to workflow optimization and continuous improvement;
- Coordinate and prioritize workload within a large team, provide on‑the‑job support to contingent staff, and communicate run performance, KPIs, and operational updates to stakeholders;
- Work closely with hub specialists and scientists as well as supporting functional spaces within the Precision Genomics program.
- Interact daily with all collaborating functional spaces within Precision Genomics as well as potentially all partners from which samples are submitted;
- Collaborate with teams across Crop Science, system improvement groups, and external partners. It builds strong working relationships and partners closely with R&D site.
WHO YOU ARE
Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree;
- Knowledge of next‑generation sequencing (NGS) technologies, platforms, and associated workflows;
- Strong molecular biology foundation with the ability to troubleshoot workflows, interpret data, and apply sound scientific judgement;
- Demonstrated good laboratory technique, including accurate pipetting, contamination control, and consistent execution of SOPs;
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships, adapt to evolving priorities, and manage multiple projects in a dynamic environment;
- Ability to occasionally work on the weekends.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, or a related field with 1+ year of relevant experience; OR
- Bachelor’s degree with 4+ years of related experience in academia or industry;
- Experience operating NGS instruments (Illumina preferred) in research or production settings; •High‑throughput automation experience, including operation and basic maintenance of robotic systems;
- Proficiency with digital lab systems such as LIMS, sample‑tracking tools, and data analysis or visualization software;
- Proficiency with NGS data assembly tools and analytical software;
- Familiarity with ISO‑based quality systems and application of quality best practices.

Employees can expect to be paid a salary between $66,400.00 to$ 99,600.00. Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission (if relevant). Additional benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, PTO, sick leave, etc. This salary range is merely an estimate and may vary based on an applicant’s location, market data/ranges, an applicant’s skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other relevant factors.
