Job Purpose

 

// The Production Site Lead is responsible for overseeing the country production operations team dedicated to advancing corn seed production for the business in Malawi and the wider Southern Africa region. In this capacity, the Site Lead develops and implements long-term strategic plans, structures and coordinates seasonal tactical plans, and directs the execution of field and site operations. This encompasses field production, harvesting, drying, seed processing, inventory management, maintaining quality standards, achieving efficiency metrics, and managing general operations of a multifunctional production site. The goal is to ensure timely and efficient delivery of commercial seed production. This position offers the opportunity to work with advanced technology and talented cross-functional teams, striving to deliver superior crop genetics globally. 

 

Key Responsibilities and Tasks

 

 The Site Lead is accountable for the delivery of the production mission in Malawi and collaborating with other functional leads on enterprise performance topics. Key responsibilities include:

// Develop and coordinate the implementation of a medium to long-term production strategy to support the commercial long-range plan. This strategy involves building a reliable and mature grower network, expanding plant capacity to match volume growth, establishing partnerships with regulatory institutions and network vendors, and enhancing team capabilities in response to evolving business expectations.

// Coordinate the development of a reliable grower network, including identification, contracting, capacity building, contract performance administration, and development of long term business propositions and engagements with mature growers, to secure a cost optimal and reliable supply of seed products.

// Foster the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment), OM (Operations Management), Quality, and Bayer Production System culture.

// Plan and take accountability for capital, maintenance, and operational budgets.

// Oversee the development and execution of annual crop plans with the field operations team and ensure production schedules are met on time and within budget.

// Ensure there are effective plans and mechanisms of management of inventory and logistics for raw products, consumables, and finished goods to enable achievement of key inventory management metrics including security, inventory holding costs, and optimization of working capital.

// Drive compliance with Bayer QMS and legal records management standards for all operational and site records, with a focus on continuous improvement.

// Ensure compliance with Quality Assurance Standards and Management Systems set by ISO9001.

// Meet goals established for Seed Supply Reliability, Quality, and Availability.

// Develop the team capabilities of the Production organization in Malawi to enable delivery of results, build enabling team behaviors and culture, and foster skills and career growth to meet current and future capability needs.

// Develop and implement an enterprise risk management strategy in conjunction with other cross functional leaders, to secure the license to operate and ensure business sustainability. This includes building partnerships with government stakeholders and building partnerships with strategic business partners to mitigate external business risks.

// Work with country functional leads on general management matters to achieve cross-functional business objectives, including team engagement, risk management and compliance, financial efficiency, asset management, and external relations. 

 

 

Experience, Skills and Qualifications

 

// Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in agricultural sciences, agricultural or mechanical engineering, production and operations management, or related fields. Good agronomy knowledge and experience in maize production or a master’s degree is advantageous.

// At least 12 years of professional experience, with a minimum of 5 years in leadership roles, and at least 5 years in agricultural production or processing operations.

// Strong strategic orientation and business acumen.

// Demonstrated team leadership and project management skills.

// Ability to lead by influence and establish strong cross-functional partnerships.

// Ability to solve complex problems and provide creative, effective solutions.

// Excellent analytical and organizational skills; results-oriented and adaptable to changing business environments.

// Strong written and oral communication skills (knowledge of local Chichewa language is an added advantage).
