What You Will Do
The Mechanical Construction Expert in Project Engineering will be responsible for driving project execution in the construction phase. This position acts as the Bayer Safety Representative and CMR for project construction and contractors and activities. In addition, this role provides quality assurance and quality control on work completed by project construction contractors and serves as the primary technical contact for project construction related questions and concerns in the field. This position is highly collaborative and will participate on multifunctional teams, including interactions with the Site and Functional personnel at all levels of the organization, including leadership, operational, and technical personnel.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Manages the interface between Construction Contractors, Project Managers, Engineers, and Unit Personnel.
- Participates in constructability studies during the development of projects.
- Interfaces regularly with other site Construction Professional Experts to understand the daily project field work plans and project activity expected across the entire site.
- Manages contractor safety in compliance with site requirements and OSHA regulations.
- Serves as second sigh-off for critical permit approval, as identified by the procedure.
- Maintains knowledge of site safety standards and ensures policy and procedure changes are communicated to the direct contractors on the project construction team.
- Coordinates with the site Production Experts on specific project related tasks in their areas, and assists in planning and identifying safety considerations and resources necessary for safe and effective project work execution.
- Participates in permit audits, WIP audits, and associated compliance documentation checks to drive accuracy and ensure compliance with internal policies and regulations. If program deviations are observed, directly coach the individual involved and share all trends with the contractor supervision, as needed.
- Understands the project schedule and is able to assess job progress status or percent (%) complete and coordinates with contractor(s) supervision to manage schedule and work efficiency.
- Understands and attains knowledge of the design intent, process flows, and process equipment functions pertaining to the scope of work.
- Understands key provisions of the contract and manages/controls and documents contract communications, change orders, and other relevant contract documentation.
- Conducts and participates in weekly construction progress meetings and issues meeting minutes.
- Clarifies contractor RFI’s (with assistance as required by the project team).
- Observes installed work to confirm that contractors are meeting quality requirements in accordance with the technical standards.
- Interfaces with Project Engineering Team Discipline Leads to resolve and manage quality issues.
- Coordinates and provides guidance to PM and Project Controls Lead on potential change orders.
- Assures timely resolution of change orders.
- Prepares weekly construction reports and other reports as requested.
- Acts as liaison with the Construction Advisor.
- Meets with the site team as required to assure that construction activities are coordinates with the site operations. This includes but is not limited to: Contractor work permits in operating areas that are under the site’s control, designated contruction areas, designated storage or lay down areas, utility outages, tie-in of utility, process equipment or buildings, pedestrian and vehicle routes, parking, and other critical activities.
- Participates in design reviews, bid package reviews, and work package reviews.
- Coordinates with contractor(s) to maintain a complete set of as-built project drawings.
- Maintains a complete and current set of drawings, specifications, vendor drawings, shop and working drawings, etc. that are formally issued by the project team to the contractor.
- Documents, logs, and provides contractor(s) with guidance in the receipt, storage, and release to contractor of site procured equipment and material.
- Communicates and coordinates with the Project Team Discipline Leads as required to verify that equipment and material deliveries are complete.
- Monitors, verifies, and controls cost when project work is conduction on a T&M basis, for projects that are staffed with other cliend field team members (i.e. Safety Manager, Field Coordinators, Safety Coordinators, Administration, Materials Manager, Scheduler); manage site staff activities and areas of responsibilities including time and expenses.
- Completes training as requested by the Construction Advisor.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum 12 years experience in manufacturing and/or construction management.
- Broad and in depth knowledge of manufacturing processes with exceptional skills in project execution, safety, troubleshooting, and quality management.
- Experience in SAF, EFDs (P&IDs), Equipment Files, Budget Management.
- Knowledge in Bayer technical practices and standards.
- Creative problem solver, positive can-do attitude, personally mature, creates opportunities and overcomes obstacles through own initiatives.
- Technical competence and demonstrated excellence in achieving outcomes.
- Demonstrates versatility and fast responsiveness in a changing environment.
- Ability to interface with all levels of Bayer Crop Science from senior management to hourly employees.
- Ability to work on numerous projects at the same time and to work internationally, flexibly, and to analyze and understand complex problems.
- Ability to pass medical clearance (e.g. pulmonary function testing, vision, hearing, etc.) as required by the project team.
- Ability to obtain and TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) cared, if required by the project team.
This role will expire on January 27th, 2026.
Employees can expect to be paid a salary $48.59 per hour. Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission (if relevant). Other benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, PTO, sick leave, etc. If selected for this role, the offer may vary based on market data/ranges, an applicant’s skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other relevant factors.
