GET TO KNOW OUR AREA:

We are GBS – Global Business Services, Bayer's shared services center, located in São José dos Campos/SP. GBS acts as a global strategic hub, supporting different areas of the company.

At this position you will be part of a Digital hub in GBS supporting R&D functions as Regulatory Science, Discovery and Testing for our Crop Protection business. Currently, there are two open position for this role.

We are seeking a talented Data Scientist who will help fundamentally transform product discovery, development, and registration in the crop protection space. You will function as a scientific and analytical problem owner, applying advanced data science, machine learning, and AI techniques (including emerging generative approaches) to enable better, faster, and more reproducible decision-making.

This role is designed for professionals who have moved beyond foundational data science skills and are ready to own analytical problems end to end — from problem framing and experimental design, through modeling and validation, to deployment and sustainable operation. You will design, build, validate, automate, and communicate data science solutions, collaborating closely with senior data scientists, domain experts, data engineers, and platform teams across R&D and Regulatory Science.

YOUR MISSION WILL BE TO:

Data Science, Machine Learning & Generative AI

• Independently design, develop, validate, and deploy data science and machine learning models and AI-driven solutions to support scientific and business decision-making.
• Translate scientific and business questions into analytical use cases, selecting appropriate ML, GenAI, or hybrid approaches including experimental design and data requirements.
• Perform advanced data exploration, feature engineering, representation learning, and model development using structured, semi-structured and unstructured data. 
• Apply and adapt machine learning, deep learning, and generative AI techniques based on problem context, data characteristics, and constraints. 
• Ensure analytical rigor, robustness, reproducibility, and scalability of solutions through sound engineering practices, documentation, testing, and validation. 
• Leverage AI-assisted development tools to accelerate experimentation, model iteration, and insight generation while maintaining scientific rigor.
• Enable automation of analytical workflows and AI-driven decision processes to improve efficiency, reproducibility, and scalability. 
• Apply advanced AI paradigms (e.g., agent-based or adaptive AI approaches where appropriate) to enable automated, scalable decision support.
• Contribute to improving and maintaining existing ML/AI models, pipelines, and AI enabled analytical workflows. 
• Partner with data engineering and platform teams to productionize, deploy, and operate analytical solutions in cloud environments. 

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

• Partner closely with interdisciplinary teams including chemists, biologists, toxicologists, bioinformaticians, and data engineers 
• Translate complex analytical findings and ML/AI outputs into clear, actionable insights for non-technical stakeholders 
• Proactively engage stakeholders to clarify requirements, align expectations, and iteratively refine analytical approaches 
• Act as an end-to-end analytical and ML/AI solution owner, from problem framing through solution delivery and lifecycle management 
• Support and mentor junior data scientists through technical guidance and best practices (without formal people management)
• Contribute to shared best practices, reusable analytical assets, and technical knowledge exchange within the global data science community

ARE YOU READY FOR THE POSITION?

• Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering or a related quantitative field. 
• Professional experience in data science, analytics, or related roles. 
• Machine Learning, AI and Analytics:
  • Supervised and unsupervised learning (e.g., tree-based models (ensemble methods, clustering).
  • Practical experience implementing and adapting machine learning and deep learning models using modern AI frameworks.
  • Model evaluation and validation (CV, ROC/PR, RMSE).
  • Feature engineering and representation learning.
  • Practical understanding of limitations such as variance and data leakage.
• Generative AI & AI Solutioning:
  • Strong proficiency in leveraging AI for problem solving: confidently using AI tools and techniques to accelerate analysis, explore solution spaces, and deliver value-driven outcomes.
  • Experience applying generative AI or foundation models for analytical problem solving, automation, or insight generation.
  • Intermediate level in AI solutioning: ability to design AI-enabled solutions by combining ML models, GenAI components, data pipelines, and business logic.
• Strong proficiency in Python, with focus on ML, AI, and AI-enabled analytics.
• Solid Experience using SQL and for data extraction analysis. 
• Visualization and storytelling: Power BI, Tableau; ability to communicate analytical and AI-driven insights to technical and non-technical audiences. 
• Engineering & MLOps fundamentals: version control (Git), reproducibility; basic model lifecycle management including monitoring, maintenance, and continuous improvement of ML/AI solutions in production environments.
• Cloud platforms (AWS/GCP/Azure) for experimentation and deployment; awareness of data governance and regulatory requirements, e.g., LGPD in Brazil. 
• Experience working in cross-functional or matrixed environments.  Strong problem-solving and analytical thinking skills, and ability to work independently.
• Clear, effective communication with both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Stay informed on emerging AI and data science trends and assess their potential applicability to R&D use cases.
• Availability to work on-site one (1) day per week in São Jose dos Campos/SP - GBS site
