Job Description Summary
Lead and deliver comprehensive legal strategy, advisory, and governance across Pharmaceuticals, Consumer Health, and Radiology businesses in India. Act as a trusted partner to senior leadership, ensuring robust legal risk management, regulatory compliance, and enabling business growth through pragmatic, solution-oriented counsel. Areas of proficiency include drugs and cosmetics law, food law, UCPMP, corporate law, real estate, tax, litigation, compliance, intellectual property and employment law. Researches, analyzes, and interprets laws, statutes, and regulations while identifying and mitigating legal risks. Responsibilities include structuring, drafting, negotiating, and approving legal contracts and policies related to trade, commercial, and operational matters. May represent Bayer in litigation or disputes, liaising with external legal counsel on complex issues.
Head Legal – Pharmaceuticals, Consumer Health & Radiology (India)
Key Responsibilities
1. Strategic Legal Leadership
- Advise senior leadership across PH (Specialty Medicines, General Medicines, Women Healthcare), CH, and Radiology (Diagnostic Imaging) on complex legal, regulatory, and compliance matters.
- Provide risk-balanced guidance aligned to business priorities and growth strategy.
- Serve as a core member of local and regional leadership teams, influencing decision-making.
- IP local custodian
- Pharma Code compliance and trainings
2. Regulatory & Compliance Excellence
- Lead legal strategy on critical regulatory areas including:

- Drug pricing and market access
- Pharma patent disputes, generic defense strategy
- Marketing authorization and product lifecycle
- Clinical trials governance
- Data privacy, food law and advertising regulations
- Industry code (UCPMP) and antitrust compliance
- Ensure strong compliance frameworks and implementation of global and local policies.
3. External Representation & Advocacy
- Represent the organization before key regulators and ministries (e.g., NPPA, DCGI, Department of Pharmaceuticals).
- Lead engagement with industry bodies (e.g., OPPI, FICCI) on patents, ethics, and policy matters.
- Support advocacy positions on pricing, product claims, patents, RDP and regulatory changes.
4. Commercial & Contracting Leadership
- Oversee negotiation and execution of high-value, complex agreements:

- Licensing (in/out)
- Joint ventures, collaborations and partnerships
- M&A transactions and restructuring
- Distribution and manufacturing, tolling contracts
- Lead Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM) and digital transformation initiatives (e.g., OpenText).
5. M&A, Partnerships & Strategic Projects
- Drive legal support for strategic transactions including divestments, partnerships and collaborations, new go to market models and business expansion initiatives.
- Act as a key negotiator in complex commercial and legal discussions.
6. Change Management & Transformation
- Lead Change Management for South Asia within Law, Patent & Compliance (LPC).
- Drive adoption of legal tech and process standardization across the region.
7. Cross‑Functional Business Partnering
- Collaborate closely with functions including Marketing, Sales, Supply Chain, Regulatory, Medical, Finance, Tax, and HR.
- Provide proactive legal insight to enable business initiatives and innovation.
8. Governance, Risk & Policy Implementation
- Co-ordinate with Regional Compliance team and Global COEs on implementing changes to HCP interaction, payments, sales force trainings to ensure compliance with Bayer’s commitments to global compacts and policies.
- Strengthen internal controls and compliance mechanisms across divisions.
Scope & Impact
- Coverage: Pharmaceuticals, Consumer Health, Radiology – India (with regional influence across South Asia).
- Leadership: Directly manages a team (2 reports) and influences cross-functional stakeholders. Operates as a senior member of the larger South Asia LPC team
- External Interface: Regulators, government bodies, law firms, industry associations, and strategic partners.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in law from a reputed institution/university.
- ~15+ years’ experience of managing legal/regulatory issues of pharmaceuticals sector, Over the Counter products and Nutraceuticals industry
- Must possess strong understanding of digital issues/AI/technology impacting lawyers Excellent drafting and negotiation skills. Proficiency in written and spoken English. Strong analytical and communication skills. Ability to lead a team as well as work in a cross-functional team. Independent and self-motivated.
- Proficiency in:
- Pharma regulatory frameworks and pricing (incl. NLEM)
- Commercial contracting, licensing and negotiations
- Litigation and government advocacy
- Patent law, procedures
- Compliance of interaction with HCPs, conduct of pharma sales promotion teams; UCPMP.
