Senior Data Engineer
We’re looking for a pragmatic, hands-on Data Engineer to join our Observability Squad and help build, run and scale our telemetry data platform based on the Grafana stack. In this role you’ll implement and maintain ingestion pipelines for metrics, logs and traces, instrument systems with OpenTelemetry, enable fast, reliable analytics for stakeholders, and collaborate closely with SREs, data architects and product teams to turn observability signals into actionable insights.
You’ll enjoy solving production-level data problems, tuning pipelines for performance and cost, and making observability data accessible and useful across the organization.
Key Tasks & Responsibilities:
- Build & operate ingestion pipelines: Implement and maintain reliable, scalable data pipelines for metrics, logs and traces (collection → transform → store → query), including backpressure handling, batching, retries and schema evolution.
- Instrument systems: Implement OpenTelemetry-based instrumentation patterns and assist teams in correct metrics/logs/traces placement, naming, and cardinality control. Integrate source systems: Build connectors and adaptors to collect telemetry from cloud, on‑prem and third-party systems.
- Schema, transformation & enrichment: Design and implement lightweight transformation and enrichment flows (labeling, parsing, lightweight aggregation, tagging) to make data queryable and useful.
- Maintain and tune storage/query layer: Operate and optimize time-series and log stores (Prometheus, Loki, Tempo), including retention, compaction, indexing and cost optimization.
- Observability tooling & dashboards: Collaborate with analysts and product owners to create and maintain Grafana dashboards, alerts, and shared visualizations that provide clear operational and business insights.
- CI/CD and automation: Build tests, linting, deployments and observability for your pipelines using GitHub Actions (or similar), Terraform/Helm and IaC best practices.
- Data governance & security: Implement data access controls, masking where needed, and ensure compliance with data governance rules for telemetry data.
Qualifications & Competencies (education, skills, experience):
- Bachelor’s or Master’s in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent experience.
- 3+ years of hands-on experience building and operating data/observability pipelines in production.
- Strong proficiency in Python (building ETL/processing code.
- Practical knowledge of the Grafana stack and OpenTelemetry concepts (metrics, traces, logs)- hands-on experience with Prometheus, Loki, Tempo or similar is highly desirable.
- Solid understanding of time-series databases, indexing and query performance tuning.
- Experience with containerization (Docker), Kubernetes, Helm and cloud platforms (preferable Azure).
- Proficient with GitHub and CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions or equivalent).
- Experience in applying Agile methodologies (e.g. Scrum, Kanban)
- Fluent in English, both written & spoken, intercultural awareness and willingness to travel from time to time.
