Senior Director, Scientific Licensing, Business Development, Oncology 

 

The Senior Director, Scientific Licensing, Business Development, Oncology  reports to the Head of Business Development & Licensing This role is responsible for identifying, shaping and executing the best possible transactions that are aligned with Bayer Pharmaceuticals' strategy. In this capacity s/he interacts with both internal stakeholders and external contacts from the life sciences industry ecosystem, for exploration of potential opportunities.

 

The role is responsible for identifying and leading a diverse range of global and regional transactions for licensing, asset acquisition, or strategic collaborations with a focus on research and early development.  S/he may singularly lead transactions end-to-end including their alliance management if they are in early stages of development or would partner with a transaction lead to complete the transaction.

 

The Senior Director, Scientific Licensing, Business Development, Oncology will be responsible for presenting assessments of individual partnering opportunities as well as related broader strategies to therapeutic area leadership as well as senior governance committees, for seeking approval to advance to term sheet stage, full due diligence, and contracting stage. The Scientific Licensing Officer may, if required, also manage selected alliances.

 

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The primary role of the Senior Director, Scientific Licensing, Business Development, Oncology is to:

 

  • Drives the overall strategy and tactic for identifying, assessing, and partnering assets for continued growth of Bayer’s respective business;
  • Responsible for integrating input from various functional areas across the organization to create high quality, clear, and decision- enabling scientific/medical assessments, due diligence reports and presentations with recommendations to Bayer’s executive management;
  • Leads the Integrated Deal Team (IDT) for early development assets and research collaborations and supports the BLO on certain early/later stage opportunities as needed. Ensure inclusion of quality research and development plans and technical schedules in contracts;
  • Partners seamlessly with Business Licensing Officer to bring in strong additions to the pipeline, with the SLO leading team on the technical assessment of the opportunity and the BLO leading on the business case and transaction;
  • Contributes to the therapeutic area short- and long-term strategy development including development of landscape views when needed and is key a thought-partner to the scientists;
  • Effectively prioritizes multiple opportunities and coordinates the workflow. Aligns prioritization and strategic direction with key stakeholders;
  • Ensures internal and external communication of the sourcing strategy and represents Bayer as a spokesperson in external partnering and scientific conferences;
  • Builds and leverages a network of connections in the academic, biotechnology, venture capital and pharma world to raise awareness of Bayer’s partnering objectives and capabilities;
  • Works with key stakeholders and cross-functional teams to drive and ensure effective communication, efficient decision-making, and completion of opportunity assessments and transactions in a timely manner;
  • Manages if required one or more alliance(s) in research or early development with external partners according to highest standards and best benefit for Bayer;
  • Executes Bayer’s Ecosystem engagement/ Open Innovation Strategy in EU/US through interactions with key ecosystem players like prioritized university hospitals, research institutes, etc.

Required Qualifications and Capabilities:

 

  • A University degree (Master or comparable) in a Life Science discipline;
  • Strong understanding of the current and evolving oncology landscape and a solid grasp of mechanisms of action, modalities relevant to this space;
  • Strong scientific and business acumen and ability to drive well-informed, fact- based decision making;
  • Excellent analytical skills, learns fast, grasps the "essence" and can change the course quickly where indicated;
  • Excellent communication skills (written, oral and presentation) are critical to synthesize and clearly communicate business strategies and capabilities internally and externally, present individual and team scientific and medical assessments and recommendations and foster cross functional consensus-building;
  • Must possess ability to develop relationships, influence across all levels and inspire confidence and trust from internal and external partners at all levels and cultures;
  • Ability to drive projects to deliver timely results and follow through on internal and external commitments;
  • Experience in leadership without formal authority and/or management of cross-functional teams;
  • Willingness to travel up to 50 % of the time.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • M.D. and/or Ph.D. in a related scientific field;  
  • 15+ years of relevant industry experience including relevant business consulting or research analyst roles within financial firms;
  • Therapeutic area expertise in Oncology;
  • A minimum of 7 years practical experience in the pharmaceutical or biotech industry in an area of drug development.
