Production Research Assistant
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Seed Production Research Assistant to support our Canola Early Breeding Seed Production team in Winnipeg, Canada. This position plays a key role in supporting research activities focused on improving canola crops through trait development. The ideal candidate will be passionate about agricultural research, possess strong technical and organizational skills, and be comfortable working in both independent and team-based environments.
This is a permanent position located at the Winnipeg, Manitoba Smartpark site. We have 2 roles available to hire.
What you will do:
Growth Room and Plant Operations
- Execute daily operations in controlled growth room environments, including:
- Seeding, transplanting, controlled pollination, and harvesting of canola plants
- Maintain optimal plant growth and development through:
- Routine plant care, pest and disease scouting, and implementation of insect and plant health control measures
Technical and Research Support
- Perform specialized research activities, including:
- Tissue sampling for molecular marker and genotyping analysis
- Chemical applications in accordance with approved protocols
- Accurate collection of phenotypic, operational, and experimental data
- Maintain detailed and accurate records of all experimental activities to ensure data integrity and traceability
Team Collaboration and Training
- Provide training and guidance to seasonal, temporary, or junior staff as required
- Work collaboratively with research scientists, breeders, and technical teams to:
- Optimize operational workflows
- Identify opportunities for process improvement
- Support the implementation of new research procedures and technologies
Quality and Compliance
- Contribute to the development, review, and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Ensure full compliance with Quality Management System (QMS) requirements, biosafety standards, and workplace health and safety policies
Who you are:
Education and Experience
- Diploma or degree in Agricultural Sciences, Plant Sciences, Biological Sciences, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
- Prior experience in agricultural research, plant breeding, seed production, or controlled‑environment crop systems is considered an asset
Skills and Competencies
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary and multicultural research environment
- Strong organizational skills with demonstrated ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and meet project timelines
- High attention to detail with strong observational, documentation, and record‑keeping skills
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Willingness and ability to learn new tools, techniques, and technologies used in modern plant breeding programs
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint), Microsoft Teams, and SharePoint
- Possession of a Manitoba Pesticide Applicator License is considered an asset

The base salary range for this role is between $44,800 and $67,200. Additional compensation may include a bonus or incentive compensation. Additional benefits may include insured benefits such as health care, vision, dental, disability, and contributory retirement savings plans, etc.
This salary range is an estimate and may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, market data and the applicant’s skills, prior relevant experience, job-related knowledge, specific degrees and certifications, and other relevant factors.
