Associate Principal Scientist (all genders)
Bayer is looking for a highly creative and motivated Biochemist / Biologist / Bio(techno)logist / Pharmacist (all genders) to join Bayer’s Protein Science and Biophysics sub-cluster within Drug Discovery Sciences, Wuppertal, Germany. You will be part of an interdisciplinary team of highly skilled scientists within the R&D organization and contribute to the discovery and engineering of innovative protein therapeutics and tools. Located in the Protein Science and Biophysics sub-cluster, you will closely collaborate with colleagues from Therapeutic Antibodies, Biology and Assay, High-throughput Biology and Chemical Biology, Imaging and Omics as wells as Pharmacology and Early Research within Pharma R&D in Germany and the US. Our new operating model “Dynamic Shared Ownership” will allow you to generate maximum impact, focus on what is important and innovate in an agile and collaborative way.
YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

You are responsible for overseeing the design, expression, purification, modification, analysis, and timely delivery of high-quality proteins antibodies, bi- and multi-specifics, Fc-fusion proteins, recombinant proteins) using state-of-the-art internal capacities or coordinating external CROs

You advance the lab's capabilities in protein science and biophysics by optimizing workflows and developing innovative technologies

You interact with a skilled team of research associates and scientists in the fields of protein science, protein biology, and therapeutic antibodies

You contribute to digital initiatives by optimizing workflows and collaborating with AI/ML experts to analyse data and facilitate in silico experimentation

You represent Drug Discovery Sciences in global teams, leveraging your knowledge in oncology, cardiovascular, renal, and immunology to manage and drive therapeutic research projects

You ensure high-quality compound selection and delivery throughout the drug discovery process, from target validation to preclinical candidate identification, while adhering to timelines and budgets

You provide proteins suitable for various stages of the drug discovery process, supporting a modality-agnostic project pipeline

You foster a high-performance culture by promoting Bayer’s VACC (Visionary, Architect, Catalyst, Coach) leadership standards, empowering colleagues, encouraging ownership, and maintaining a culture of psychological safety and peer accountability
WHO YOU ARE
-
You have completed a PhD in biochemistry, biology, biotechnology, pharmacy, or a related field, along with long-term leadership experience

You bring several years’ experience with biophysical methods to describe protein-protein interactions and key parameters of protein integrity (e.g., SEC-MALS, ITC, DLS, DSF, SPR), and basic knowledge of structural biology and design-function relationships is advantageous

You have strong knowledge and experience in conducting research to understand the structure, properties, and function of proteins

You demonstrate a good understanding of the biotherapeutics drug discovery process and have experience working in a modality-agnostic environment

You have knowledge of target biology in Bayer’s key disease areas, including oncology, cardiovascular, renal, and immunology

You exhibit excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills, showing a willingness and ability to work successfully in diverse, high-performing teams and collaborate in a mission-focused, multidisciplinary environment

You show high learning agility, excellent self-organization skills, a high degree of commitment and the ability to take action for continuous improvement

You are fluent in English, both written and spoken, and have excellent communication and presentation skills
