Breeding Nursery Specialist (m/f/d) 

 

Bayer Crop Science is a leading agricultural company specializing in innovative crop protection products, seeds, and digital solutions to help farmers sustainably increase productivity.

The Breeding Nursery Specialist is responsible for day-to-day execution of breeding operations, ensuring high-quality data collection, accurate seed production, effective inventory management, and on-time delivery of materials.

The role focuses on practical field, nursery, and data execution, working closely with breeders and operations teams to ensure smooth delivery of breeding programs and reliable outputs for pipeline advancement.

This is a hands-on operational role supporting vegetable breeding and seed production activities at the Latina research station.

 

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Execute daily breeding and nursery activities including sowing, transplanting, crossing support, harvesting, and seed processing
  • Support trial setup, maintenance, and execution according to protocols
  • Ensure accurate labelling, tracking, and traceability of plant and seed materials
  • Maintain high standards for quality, hygiene, and compliance in field and greenhouse
  • Support seed production processes, including pollination, harvesting, drying, cleaning, and packaging
  • Ensure seed quality, traceability, and compliance with breeding protocols
  • Coordinate material flow between nursery, greenhouse, storage, and shipping
  • Monitor and report issues impacting seed quality, yield, or availability
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date seed inventory records in enterprise systems
  • Track stock levels, movements, and usage to ensure availability for trials and shipments
  • Support inventory checks, reconciliation, and data validation
  • Ensure proper storage conditions and handling practices are consistently applied
  • Collect phenotypic and operational data in field and nursery environments
  • Ensure timely, accurate, and complete data entry into systems
  • Perform basic data validation and quality checks, highlighting inconsistencies
  • Support preparation of datasets for breeding decisions and reporting
  • Execute operational plans to ensure on-time delivery of seed, trials, and data outputs
  • Coordinate closely with breeders and operations teams to align activities and timelines
  • Track execution progress and proactively escalate risks or delays
  • Identify and resolve day-to-day operational issues
  • Support troubleshooting through root cause analysis and corrective actions
  • Contribute ideas to improve efficiency, workflows, and operational reliability
  • Efficient execution of daily nursery and breeding operations

 

WHO YOU ARE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Plant Science, Crop Science, Agriculture, or related field
  • At least 6 months of practical experience in field, greenhouse, or nursery operations (preferred)
  • Experience with seed production or plant handling activities (preferred) 
  • Experience in data collection in agricultural or research environments (preferred) 
  • Familiarity with inventory or material tracking systems is an advantage
  • Ability to work in operational environments (field + greenhouse)
  • Strong organizational skills for managing daily activities and priorities
  • Basic data entry and system usage skills
  • Good teamwork and communication in a multicultural environment
  • Ability to follow protocols and deliver under time-sensitive conditions
  • Residence or domicile in Lazio
  • Fluent knowledge of English and Italian mother tongue

Type of contract: Fixed term contract (6 months)

The initial annual gross compensation for this role is not below 36.367,10 EUR
