Vegetable Production Research Scientist 

 

Within our fast-moving environment, we are looking for you as Production Research Scientist.

You will be working in a dynamic and open work environment with a “get it done” attitude, no matter which functional area.

 

In this role, you will be part of a collaborative team of about 26 professionals, working across different geographies and vegetable seed crops all striving for turning our vision & mission into action. You will mostly focus in Europe and work cross functionally with Breeding, Commercial and Vegetable Product supply colleagues.

YOUR NEW ROLE 

Coordinate local Production Research efforts that align with shared Crop Team objectives and priorities as defined through the collective prioritization process.

 

Foster strong connections with peers, Crop Specialists, field production teams, seed processing, and Quality, promoting shared knowledge and collaborative problem-solving. Validate new technologies under local conditions, focusing on improving seed quality, yield, and cost-effectiveness. Address seed production challenges while exercising collective judgment and a realistic understanding of the issues at hand. Combine result-oriented leadership with initiative and foresight, facilitating proactive, data-driven decision making. Employ statistical analysis to tackle problems, ensuring that diverse perspectives contribute to effective solutions

 

Your main working location will be onsite Enkhuizen and Bergschenhoek. To be able to commute between locations we do expect you to have a valid driver’s license.

 

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Member of a Veg SPI Crop Squad, contributing with inputs to define solutions and channeling requests from local field teams to the Veg SPI crop squad.
  • Translate specific business outcomes into research questions as well as detailed research plans, timelines, including resourcing and budgeting requirements.  
  • Manage project lifecycle execution with a focus on technical rigor, performing or overseeing statistical data analysis, reporting, and communication to all relevant stakeholders. Hands-on approach to lead field research and laboratory operations as necessary.
  • Provide proactive, data-driven insights and recommendations, demonstrating initiative and a commitment to fast learning in order to inform decision-making processes.
  • Leverage insights from a network of colleagues and specialists, maintaining strong connections with peers in Field Production, Crop Teams, SPI, and Quality to foster collaboration and enhance research outcomes.
  • Utilize advanced problem-solving techniques to identify root causes of issues in Field Production, developing and implementing effective solutions that align with crop team objectives.
  • Organize and execute parental characterization trials and phase 4 data collection, collaborating closely with Crop Placement Coordinators, Product Specialists and field production team. Ensure strict adherence to established protocols and quality standards of data collection.
  • Coordinate and collaborate within the LEABRA PR team for comprehensive evaluations of varietal performance across regions, ensuring data integrity and relevance in product advancement
  • Analyze and prepare data for the phase and product advancement recommendations and internal VSPS Flagging system.
  • Review of LEABRA pcm2/3 trial data and producibility results with R&D to ensure feedback to breeding on product performance.
  • Deliver production guidance for LEABRA Phase 4a materials through Product Profiles, utilizing trial data to set recommendations on base rates, priming, ratios, and other critical production factors that enhance operational efficiency.
  • Collaborate with Production teams to update local and global Seed Production Manuals, ensuring they reflect current agronomic standards and incorporate insights gained from ongoing research activities to drive continuous improvement.
  • Engage with Bayer networks to enhance performance, actively sharing and implementing best practices across teams to drive innovation and operational excellence.
  • Utilize company IT systems effectively to document research results, ensuring compliance with future freedom to operate (FTO) considerations and maintaining a comprehensive record of findings.
  • Participate in departmental ISO quality audits and contribute to procedure documentation, ensuring adherence to industry standards and continuous improvement of quality management systems.

WHO YOU ARE

  • Master’s degree in Agricultural Science, Agronomy, Biology, or a related field required PhD.
  • 1+ year, MSc with 3 years, or BSc with 5-8 years of relevant experience in the seed industry or related agricultural sectors, demonstrating a strong technical foundation and expertise.
  • Exceptional communication skills in English, both oral and written, with the ability to effectively convey complex information to diverse audiences and adapt messaging to various contexts and circumstances.
  • Results-oriented mindset with a proven ability to influence and drive outcomes within a matrixed organization, effectively collaborating across functions to achieve strategic goals and enhance project success.
  • Strong cultural competency and adaptability, with a demonstrated ability to navigate and thrive in multicultural environments, leveraging diverse perspectives to foster innovation and team cohesion.
  • Proven track record of successful project delivery, showcasing the ability to manage complex initiatives from inception to completion while meeting deadlines and exceeding quality standards.
  • Valid drivers license is required
  • Able to travel 5-10% within Europe.
